MiniBooks- Reading Tips

When we first started reading large PDF documents on our computer, we found it was a bit tedious.

Unfortunately we found trying to print 800 page manuals for the occasional reference was not something that we wanted to do either.

So we decided to see if we could improve our online reading experience. We found the following tips to be very handy and now find online reading of manuals to be quite acceptable.

  • Maximise the PDF window

  • Press F5 to turn off bookmarks if they are on.

  • Press F8 to hide toolbars

  • Press F9 to hide Menu Bar

  • Use the Page up and Page down keys with the occasional up arrow or down arrow to adjust the partial line at the edge of the screen.

  • Use the screen resolution mode of 1024x768 if possible.

We have designed our MiniBooks with online viewing in mind. The page numbering of the MiniBooks start at one. This means the Acrobat Reader page number corresponds to the actual page number in the MiniBooks

The Table of Contents page number can thus be used to quickly jump to a desired section. You can use Control+N to bring up the Go To Page dialogue. You can use the Document -> Go To Page from the menu, or you can type in the page number in the navigation area in the bottom left of the screen.

We do not use Bookmarks as we use OpenOffice.org to produce the MiniBooks and bookmarks are currently not supported.
