Open Source Software

At Online Connections we believe we should always be looking for alternatives for our clients. Open Source software is one such alternative.

Over the years we have been the first to dismiss shareware and freeware software. The problems usually encountered with this software, usually out weighed the benefits.

Now we are presented with a new and excellent opportunity and it is called Open Source software.

In a nut shell, Open Source software in theory, is the controlled development of software where anyone can view, modify and submit changes or suggestions back to the controlling group.

The actual programs or their source code is available for anyone to view or modify.

The software is generally free, although people usually do charge to distribute and support the software.

Some of this software is now of such good quality that it has become mainstream and thus offers opportunity for businesses to reduce their costs.

This is not to say that all Open Source software is good. From a business perspective one needs to consider the quality of the product, ongoing development and support.

Open source software should be approached the same way as you approach purchasing commercial software.

You should review the software against your list of requirements. Price is after all only one of the requirements.

Many people review software against other software. The best approach is to review the software against your requirements.

You should also:

  • Review the licensing terms.

  • Understand the project

  • Find out who owns the copyright

  • Find out who does most of the development.

  • Find out from other users who are completely independent of the project what they find are the strengths and weaknesses of the software.

  • Determine the risks associated with the software.

  • Consider how the software integrates with other software and hardware you may use now and in the future.

  • Consider both your short terms needs and your long term needs.

  • What lost productivity will occur if you change software.

  • How easy is it to hire staff who know how to use the software.

  • What is the support available for the software and how much support will you need.

Most of all don't get caught up in the hype. You have a business to run. What you are really after is the best solution to meet the needs of your business.
