Overview of 25km Radius

The Victorian government announced the next stage for the travel limit for exercise and shopping will be changed to 25km.

The 25km Radius web app enables people to quickly see the area covered by the 25km radius around them and the 25km radius overlap of their friends.

To exercise people can travel up to 25km. To exercise with another person each person must not travel for more than 25km which means you need to find a place where both of you do not travel more than 25km. A feature of the 25km Radius web app is you can send your location to another person and that person can send you their location. Now both of you can see each other's location and where your 25km areas overlap.

Using 25km Radius for just your location

When you open the 25km Radius web app your location is provided by your device. Some mobile devices can be slow to update the location so an accuracy is provided. If you feel the accuracy isn't good enough reload the page by clicking on the Home option until you get the accuracy you'd prefer.

Your current location is shown using a white marker.

The red circle shows the area that is up to 25km around you.

You can use the 25km Radius web app on a notebook or desktop computer but since those devices don't usually include a location capability, best results can be obtained using a mobile phone. Recent Windows 10 computers can manually set your default location.

Using 25km Radius for you and a friend

Send each other your locations. Click on the link you receive. Your friend will appear as a grey marker in a blue circle. You can see where the circles overlap and that is where you could potentially meet an exercise.

If you don't feel like you and your friend sending each other your locations, you can use Google to find the location you want and enter the GPS coordinates of the location. You can do this as follows, or if you'd rather, watch a video.

  • Open Google Maps
  • Enter the address of the location or move the map so you can see the location you want.
  • Move your mouse to the location on the map. Make sure the pointer for the mouse is an arrow and not a hand.
  • Left click on the map at the location. If you searched for a location, left click near the marker but not too close that the pointer is a hand. The pointer needs to be an arrow.
  • An information pop-up appears which shows information about the location and the GPS coordinates separated by a comma.
  • Highlight and copy the GPS coordinates.
  • Paste the GPS coordinates into the GPS Location field above.
  • Click the Show button and the 5km Radius page will be reloaded with your location shown in a red circle and the GPS location you entered shown in a blue circle.
The overlap of the red and blue circles is the area where you could meet with a friend or family to exercise. If there's no overlap then you're out of luck.

Show 50km limit

The 50km limit circle enables you to quickly see if someone you know around you is close enough to meet you for exercise. If another person is within the 50km limit then their 25km radius will overlap with your 25km radius.

Map changes

If you've noticed the map changes late afternoon or at night, you're not imagining things. Two services are used and the change is a result of exeeding Tomtom's quota and then OpenStreetMaps is used. My thanks and credit to both Tomtom and OpenStreetMaps for providing their services.
